No doubt that you've seen the newspaper headlines over the last few weeks

The Coalition Government has recently announced its plan to reform the National Health Service. These changes will have serious implications for all levels of health care.

Naturally, there is a lot of concern about what this would mean practically for patients, but also for you as primary care providers.

The far reaching implications of the proposed changes include:
  1. Additional demand on skill, time and resources to manage additional workloads (commissioning services)
  2. Patients will have choice of GP practice and choice of treatment which could lead to demand either increasing or decreasing dramatically
  3. Financial rewards will be based on quality and patient feedback and outcomes, which might be more subjective than current standards
  4. Increased transparency will possibly increase liability and reputation risks, and
  5. Decrease in staff moral and productivity in the interim period while changes are being shaped and implemented.
It's absolutely normal to find yourself in conflict, post these announcements. On the one-hand, these announcements are truly a fundamental reform, and might even be justified in many instances in respect to patients, but there are some serious implications that need to be considered and prepared for at provider level.
